Elementary school in Japan

Hi everyone,

Today my post is about school in Japan. Everybody is asking me how is Japanese school so I am going to explain to you.

School Part 1

In Japan the school year starts in April.

In my school there are 6 grades. The ages are from 5 to 12. The 1 grade students have to wear a yellow cap and from 2 grade to 6 grade we wear a red cap. We have a special bag were we store all are notebooks and textbooks called a ランドセル, Landoseru. We bring a Burglar alarm to school which we hang on a special hook on the ランドセル. We have to have a handkerchief in our pocket. We wear socks, sport shoes and casual clothing.

A basic day in school

We go to school between 8:15 and 8:25, but if we have assembly we go to school at 8:00, because assembly starts at 8:30.

This is a greeting we do in the beginning of each class even if it is the same teacher.

In Japan, most children go to school alone, because the school is very near and we all live in the same neighborhood. The assembly is held at the gym or at the school ground. Then we have morning classes homeroom (the main classroom). Morning classes are held in homeroom for each class.

The teacher will announce important information of day's activities at homerooms. Classes, 授業, JYUGYOU, start at 8:45. All the subjects are taught by the homeroom teacher except special classes like maths classes, art, social studies, music and science. There are 4 classes in the morning, 45 minutes each. The subjects change according to the day of the week. There is a 5 minutes break, 夜須未時間, YASUMI JIKAN and a longer break of 25 minutes, 中屋炭, NAKA YASUMI. Children can go to the rest room during break time.

The school lunch, 級色, KYUUSHOKU, is from 12:25 to 13:05. The lunch is provided by the school and the parents pay for it. We take turns serving lunch to our own classes, 級色当番, KYUUSHOKU TOUBAN.

The lunch at my school is like in this video. First, we have to put all the tables together. Those who are in lunch duty have to go to the kitchen and bring the lunch packs in the classroom. We wash our hands and we are served by those in lunch duty. We do the greeting. The menu is announce. And then we can start eating after saying "itadakimasu"Gochisosama-deshita (ごちそうさまでした) "Thank you for the good meal"

Their are days with no lunch so we eat at home but we don't go back to school after. Cleaning time, 送辞, starts at 13:05. The children clean the classrooms and the school ground. After that we have the after lunch break, 昼や炭, HIRU YASUMI.

The cleaning time was the most difficult for me. I am always falling. But now I can be as fast as the other children in my class.

It finishes at 13:45. We have class again, normally but there are days with no classes in the afternoon. We have afternoon homeroom, かえりの会, KAERI NO KAI. The teacher talks about the next day and what we need to bring to school and distributes letters from the school, 連絡プリント, RENRAKU PURINTO.

Ready to leave after a "long" day. The classes finish at 3PM or 4PM but never late like in France.

We go home,げこう, GEKOU. There are clubs in the school that children can join if their parents are not at home after school were they do activities and help with homework, ガクどうクラブ,GAKUDOU CLUB.

Necessary items for school

For school I needed a swimming suit, a Kenban harmonica, a flute, and a ruler, etc. The parents have to buy what is written on the schedule.

Wash on weekends and bring them on Monday

Every Friday students take home their PE (physical education) uniforms and indoor-shoes. Those who are in charge of school lunch, 灸色と晩, KYUUSHOKU TOBAN, will need to take home the school apron and cap,某氏, BOUSHI. We need to wash those and to bring them back to school on next Monday.
