Celebrating Thanksgiving ?

Celebrating Thanksgiving ?

The story of how Thanksgiving came about is never really clearly and truly portrayed by the countries which celebrate it: America and Canada. Being in an Asian International School, I doubt a lot of people know the story of Thanksgiving from the perspective of native Americans. If we were to have a thanksgiving dinner of some sort, I believe that the name should be changed because thanksgiving is the celebration of the genocide of America’s indigenous people which would be against ISAK values. What is usually said is that Europeans came in peace to the “New World” in order to cooperate with indigenous people. That is not true. Europeans were extremely brutal in their victory and many indigenous people were sold into slavery and had the teach the Europeans how to harvest so that they would survive and continue stealing their land. Many students in my school celebrated Thanksgiving, not even knowing what it meant. In my opinion, the elimination of the indigenous groups of America should be classified as a genocide.

I discovered that in 1637 the body of a white man was found dead. Armed pioneers - who people call God dreading, delicate, sharing, kind Pilgrims - attacked a Pequot town. They set the town ablaze. The individuals who were sufficiently fortunate to get away from the flame were efficiently looked for, chased down and slaughtered. This event otherwise called the Pequot Massacre, prompted the creation of "Thanksgiving Day." This is what the legislative leader of Bay Colony needed to say days after the slaughter, "A day of thanksgiving. Expressing gratitude toward God that they had wiped out more than 700 men, ladies and kids."
When I at last figured out the inceptions of Thanksgiving it made me sick. People in my school are commending an occasion that they know nothing about. I am extremely grateful, that I found out about the beginnings of this occasion. It is a reminder that history can be changed and if told enough times in the end turns into reality!

Individuals dependably instruct me to overlook the past. I ought to simply release it and proceed onward. Why do ethnic minorities need to forget the past?! Would you enlighten a Jewish individual to overlook the holocaust and simply proceed onward?! Would you tell the group of the individuals who lost their lives on 9/11 to simply forget about it?! So why are our tragedies forgettable?! I WILL always remember! I will ALWAYS respect the individuals who lost their lives.

So when you take a seat to supper this year, take a look at your family, let each know other what you are most grateful for, consider the beginnings of Thanksgiving. Consider the innumerable Native Americans who lost their lives so you can cut a turkey and get the best deals on Black Friday. Say a prayer to God for them, particularly the kids, who passed on just as a result of the shade of their skin.
